A couple of months ago I put together a tiny exhibition in the window of Bookartbookshop. In case you're not familiar with it, Bookartbookshop is an amazing place - tiny and packed to the rafters with independent and self published books, full of weirdness and beauty. It's a good spot. It felt nice having some of my work visible to the actual real-life public.
I had a mixture of ceramics, drawings, wire sculptures, and some altered plants. One of the plants I cut all the leaves into the shapes of hands. It looked good, but by the time I took these photos it had shrivelled up somewhat. Quelle surprise.
Another candle holder. I love this glaze. It's called Egyptian Blue.
Here's the results of some of this experimentation - a whole group of candle holder heads. You may remember the first one I made in NYC from this post. She's the one on the far right in these group shots.
Second from the right is creepin' me out allll daaaay evvvverryyy daaay.
And the second and third from the left have their faces painted with the exact same thing - but the white glaze underneath is different. It changes the result so much! Something to do with their chemical makeups. I like playing with this stuff. And oh yeah, how great is that turquoise that's inside some of their heads? I love that colour.
Ok, so now I've figured these out a little better, I can start making something that actually looks how I planned. Hopefully. Ace.
For those of you who've been asking - yes! I am planning to make ceramic pieces to tell. However, it's slow getting things figured out, and making pieces come out how I want them, especially since I can only work on them one evening a week. I'll be making small editions over the next few months and expect that I'll be able to have some in my shop in the new year (told you it was slow).
A petite clay rabbit I made a little while back. He's about three inches long. I quite like his sort of dirty, scuffed surface.
Another ceramic experiment. As usual, the result was pretty different than expected - his face ran and warped in the kiln, and was meant to be rich, dark blue, but came out very pale & faded. I still quite like him but want to try again, see if I can get more accurate line with the glaze.
Also, yknow, a million other vessels in a similar vein planned. I want to try lots of other animal heads and, of course, the ubiquitous girl's face that I seem to produce eternally. As soon as I find an open access ceramics studio in London, more will follow.
I like how the glaze blurred and moved a little on this one.
