At last, the new collection I've been working on for months for Datter is here. The new pieces are a little more abstract, some using motifs from existing pieces - multiplying, simplifying, chopping and changing them around - others completely new.

We also made a new lookbook, photographed by the incredible Sabine Timm. Collector of beach trash, creator of weird, funny, unnatural little worlds.

And the final announcement about Datter is: we now have a studio in Brooklyn as well as in London, and therefore have two websites to go with. There's a USA site for US and Canadian customers, and a UK site for UK, European, and international customers. Anybody can order from either site, of course, but when you visit the sites will try to direct you to the one which gives you the fastest, cheapest shipping options. You can also switch between them by using the flags at the top right. We're a multinational now. Believe.

Wednesday, May 7, 2014 SEEKING AN NYC ASSISTANT

Hello friends. I'm moving back to Brooklyn tomorrow. It may be short term, it may be long term, I'm gonna play it by ear. But the one thing I know for sure about it is: Datter needs an assistant. I'm moving the business over and hoping to grow it from NYC.

I think the job will be around 15 hours a week, ideally spread over two or three days. Much the same as when I posted looking for help in London last year, so the ad that follows may be familiar. The job will be working on various different things - part of it would be working on fulfilling and packaging orders, collecting items from casters and jewellery suppliers, managing some administrative aspects, and help with making and finishing the jewellery itself.

I think & hope this would be pretty useful experience for anybody interested either in making jewellery, or in running a small craft-based business. It'll be quite hands-on and you'll see and help with every aspect of the business, so I hope it'll be valuable, as well as, y'know, a paycheck.

So I need somebody organised and quick to learn - experience making jewellery is a plus but not essential. You probably do need to be fairly crafty and good with your hands, though! And you'd need to be computer and web-savvy, and if you have any other particular skills (photography, writing, etc) I'm sure we can make 'em count. Payment is going to be somewhat dependant on experience, but there'll be none of that unpaid internship nonsense.

It's time! I've been running this ol' jewellery business for two years or so now, and it's been awesome, but it's also gotten a bit out of hand. I can no longer run it as a one-woman show: I need an assistant, or an intern - basically I need some help help help.

Interested? Or know anybody who might be? Send 'em my way.

News! Actual news!
I've been working flat out on all this for a while, but now it's finally done: my jewellery now has a new collection, a new lookbook, and a new website to put it all on. Praise the lord! Go have a gander if you feel so inclined - it's all now on the mega-official datterindustries.com

And one other thing - Datter now has it's own blog, over on the famous tumblr. So while I'll occasionally post big jewellery related news here, all the little bits of process, snapshots, etc will now be here. Join me. You'll get amazing content like this photo of me making jewellery:

This was pretty exciting. I was asked to do an interview for DPI, a Taiwanese magazine. They've featured a ton of artists that I love, so it was great to be included. And boy, were they speedy - only a couple weeks from my answering the questions, to the magazine coming through my mailbox. A couple weeks ago I had a stall at the Renegade Craft Fair, selling my jewellery. It's only the second time they've held it in London, but I was pretty familiar with it from the US, where Renegade is Big News. It was pretty great. These are a few photos of my table - just got the film developed. I dont have a lot of display skills, but still, it was nice seeing all these things I've made spread out. Proof that they exist! Made a good change from all online sales.

Woah, dudes. Datter Industries has had suddenly had some actual press in the last couple weeks. So exciting to see. Check it! First up, my jewellery was written about in Dutch Glamour magazine. A sweet customer in the Netherlands, Lotte, scanned this for me.

I'm also here on the Lucky Magazine website, with the nicest lil' write-up from megababe Meredith Bogonovich. Aaand I believe my jewellery is in this month's LINDA magazine, also a Dutch mag, though I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy or a scan of that yet. Still, radness! I haven't posted jewellery pieces on here in a while. Here are a couple of new-ish earring designs I've been working on. Little cat faces and spears (or feathers, or leaves). In silver and brass, as usual. They're all in my shop should you be tempted.

It's been interesting getting set up for jewellery back in England. I started doing it in NYC and had no idea how to find supplies, casters, and so on back in London. But it's alright! There's a lovely little jewellery district in Hatton Gardens, well stocked with everything I could ever need. Thanks London.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 Tiny hands

A few new designs that I've been 'prototyping', which basically means wearing them and not wanting to part with them long enough to make a mold. I will though. Before too long, these will be in the shop. For now though they're just on me.



The little hands are somewhat based on this amazing medieval ring. According to the BBC, it was found by Mrs Joanna Birdseye, when searching with a metal detector. Can you imagine? That's the luckiest woman on the planet. I've started on a ring with the hands too, but it's not even at the prototyping stage yet. Still in wax.



If I keep going at this rate, my arm will soon be too weighed down to draw with.

Playing around with scraps of leather. Awards for those who behave themselves.







They're all in my jewelry etsy, should you be interested in owning one. I'm hoping people order custom ones to be relevant to friends who've achieved something: a drawing of a carrot to someone who just finished chef school, etc. But so far people seem pretty happy with just cats and thumbs up (and why shouldn't they be?) so I'm goin' with that.

I managed to work out a way to reduce my jewellery prices a lot, for now at least. They're now much more affordable and I'm much more comfortable selling them at this level - I want things to be available to people in a similar budget-bracket to me. And now they are. Do I post about all the things I make and sell enough? Dayumm. It's almost as though I don't do anything else.

I've been meaning to photograph the waxes that get turned into jewellery for a while now. Finally remembered to do it. Here is a fox stole in original carved wax form:

I also made a ring of skulls that I haven't stopped wearing since I got it cast. It reminds me of a misspent youth in Camden town. You might need to click to view it a little bigger, their faces are pretty teeny.

21st birthday gift for my brother, Viggo. So he can leave his mark on anyone who might wrong him (and also slices of bread, soaps, leather jackets, etc). I'm going to start making custom ones, but probably a little smaller - something subtler and more wearable for your average, less-theatrical-and-eccentric-than-a-Blegvad, person.

Also, brass knuckles are illegal. So I'll have to play up the 'novelty jewellery' aspect, and minimise the 'brand your enemies' feature.

I've been making jewellery lately. I sell it in a wonderful store in the East Village, called the Shape of Lies, and am in the process of finding other stockists and setting up a store to sell online. Laser cutting is awesome.
