Some more drawings from France. A couple of things I found in the flat, that belong to my grandfather. I thought both of them were rather touching little artefacts. He's an illustrator (over 100 children's books under his belt), and is quite particular about his art supplies. Many of them were labelled like this. I used his ink to draw these - sorry Grandpa! Hope you don't mind!

News! Actual news!
I've been working flat out on all this for a while, but now it's finally done: my jewellery now has a new collection, a new lookbook, and a new website to put it all on. Praise the lord! Go have a gander if you feel so inclined - it's all now on the mega-official datterindustries.com

And one other thing - Datter now has it's own blog, over on the famous tumblr. So while I'll occasionally post big jewellery related news here, all the little bits of process, snapshots, etc will now be here. Join me. You'll get amazing content like this photo of me making jewellery:

Oh yeah, there's more. Way more. Here's some of the mind blowing views we were pouring our eyes on from way up in the cliffside village*. And just some of the greenery. God, the greenery. Screw you, England! Time to step up if you wanna stay in the game.

*in the distance of the first shot, you'll see the bay and skyscrapers of Monte Carlo, the crotch of Europe. We got the wrong bus one day and ended up there. In the name of all that is tasteful and holy, never go there.

I got my films back. Really drives home how absolutely incredible this place was. I have so many photos to put here. Will try to pace it out. Here are some shots of Roquebrune village itself : dating from the 10th century, built right into the mountainside. Let's start this with a shot of the model village (wonderful, rickety cardboard contraption) to give you a sense of the whole. Then some 'detail shots' which I had the hardest time in my life editing down. This entire place is a wonderland.

Sunday, June 9, 2013 Drawings from Roquebrune

A few weeks ago, Lion and I went to stay in my grandparents' flat in the South of France. It's a tiny place that they've had since the 70s, though I hadn't been since I was a little kid and had no memory of it. Man, it was incredible. It's in a 10th century village, built into the cliff face, right on the Cote d'Azur and the border of Italy. I'm waiting on photographs to be developed to show you the sheer beauty of it, but in the meantime here are a few drawings I did of the inside of the flat. It was so nice to be there, like being with my Grandma again.

Monday, May 27, 2013 Window Display

A couple of months ago I put together a tiny exhibition in the window of Bookartbookshop. In case you're not familiar with it, Bookartbookshop is an amazing place - tiny and packed to the rafters with independent and self published books, full of weirdness and beauty. It's a good spot. It felt nice having some of my work visible to the actual real-life public.

I had a mixture of ceramics, drawings, wire sculptures, and some altered plants. One of the plants I cut all the leaves into the shapes of hands. It looked good, but by the time I took these photos it had shrivelled up somewhat. Quelle surprise.

The show just finished, and these are a few photos I just got developed. They're grainy and don't do the work justice (expired film) but boy, these paintings look good.

At last! I put my ceramics in my shop. It only took, y'know, six months or so. But I finally have enough of them that I like, and feel like I'm going to be able to make more that I like - so it seemed like the right time. Check it out here!

This was pretty exciting. I was asked to do an interview for DPI, a Taiwanese magazine. They've featured a ton of artists that I love, so it was great to be included. And boy, were they speedy - only a couple weeks from my answering the questions, to the magazine coming through my mailbox.
