New Datter Collection
At last, the new collection I've been working on for months for Datter is here. The new pieces are a little more abstract, some using motifs from existing pieces - multiplying, simplifying, chopping and changing them around - others completely new.
We also made a new lookbook, photographed by the incredible Sabine Timm. Collector of beach trash, creator of weird, funny, unnatural little worlds.
And the final announcement about Datter is: we now have a studio in Brooklyn as well as in London, and therefore have two websites to go with. There's a USA site for US and Canadian customers, and a UK site for UK, European, and international customers. Anybody can order from either site, of course, but when you visit the sites will try to direct you to the one which gives you the fastest, cheapest shipping options. You can also switch between them by using the flags at the top right. We're a multinational now. Believe.

Window Display
A couple of months ago I put together a tiny exhibition in the window of Bookartbookshop. In case you're not familiar with it, Bookartbookshop is an amazing place - tiny and packed to the rafters with independent and self published books, full of weirdness and beauty. It's a good spot. It felt nice having some of my work visible to the actual real-life public.
I had a mixture of ceramics, drawings, wire sculptures, and some altered plants. One of the plants I cut all the leaves into the shapes of hands. It looked good, but by the time I took these photos it had shrivelled up somewhat. Quelle surprise.

Datter in DPI Magazine

This was pretty exciting. I was asked to do an interview for DPI, a Taiwanese magazine. They've featured a ton of artists that I love, so it was great to be included. And boy, were they speedy - only a couple weeks from my answering the questions, to the magazine coming through my mailbox. If you'd like to read my answers, you can see gigantic images of the pages here: page 1 and page 2. And check out the cat making her editorial debut!

Cutting social security
A super-quick-turnaround drawing for the NYTimes letters page yesterday. Letters responding to an article about proposed cuts to social security. Rather timely given that yesterday a barrage of benefit cuts came into place in the UK, heralding the apocalypse we've all been waiting for.*
In print the drawing is teeny-wee, but you can read the letters and see the drawing (again) online here.
*Those cuts, combined with the whole goodbye-gulf-stream-hello-eternal-winter situation, mean it might be time to up sticks to Cali. For the entire population of the UK. Get ready, In-N-Out!

Comics Sketchbooks
Uh, yeah, that's my name in the contents page in some pretty intense company - Charles Burns?! Robert Crumb?! Ben Katchor?! Not to mention my ol' man. So rad.
And that's one of my two spreads.
I cannot express how flattering and great it feels to be in this most excellent book. Time to knuckle down and make all those comics I keep meaning to make. Huge thanks to Steve Heller.

And you can read the letters on the subject here, if you didn't catch them in yesterday's paper.

Tuesday
Oh lawd, it's been a long time. Life's been complicated. I'm getting back on track now, fingers crossed.
This is a drawing I did a little while back for the excellent ladies at Got A Girl Crush Magazine. It's a portrait of my pal Tuesday - we interviewed and illustrated each other. So if you pick up the magazine (which you should do) you'll be treated to quite a long (and fascinating, obv) interview with me. My name is even on the front cover of the magazine, yo!
An extract, in case you just can't wait. I was asked to write a haiku that defined my work. Here it is, tellin' you stuff you already know:

A Sikh Temple's Century
This one was for an article about a Sikh-American woman's memories of her community and her temple, in the aftermath of the appalling Wisconsin murders. You can read the article here. I recommend it.

Oh Comely
Drew this for the lovely Oh Comely Magazine. Accompanying an article about a teenage girl who shared her birthday party with her grandmother, and thoughts about keeping friends throughout your life. Just a simple drawing.
There was also a tiny interview with me at the back of the magazine (I'll spare you) and they're doing a giveaway for one of my garland kits too. It's a Kaye-heavy issue.

The Daily
Here's a drawing I did for someone who can maintain frequent updates - The Daily. For an article about finding a good doctor, and how much of that is up to chance. It was nice to cut up bits of colored paper again, it's been a while.

Homesickness

My first one-day-turnaround drawing for the New York Times Op-Ed pages. Sketches due by 2pm, final due by 5.30pm, runs in print the next day. This was awesome to work on, with art direction & moral support from Matt Dorfman. I'm just gonna come out and say it: I love deadlines. I need to get a room with deadlines.
You can read the article here. It's about people moving to other countries and keeping ties to home via technology (hello, this article is about Kaye Blegvad).

A plea to the New York based readers

Things are getting busy over at Kaye Blegvad, Inc. The next few weeks are going to be crazy- I think crazy enough that I can't actually do it all myself. So I'm looking for some temporary assistance in the form of a human being or two.
If anybody interested in illustration or making jewellery would like to help me / hang out with me, it would be the most amazing thing ever. It'd mainly be helping produce products, working on jewelry, packaging and things like that. There might be a bit of dashing around town to pick stuff up, but mainly we'd just be working together, probably with a Netflix-on-projector accompaniment. I hope it will be interesting and a bit fun.
I'm based in South Slope and work in spaces in Gowanus and Carroll Gardens. I'd love it if somebody could help for two or three days a week from about March 22nd to about April 8th, but it's all flexible. If you can only do a couple days it'd all help! I can't offer much by way of wages (I know, I know, it sucks, I've been there, once I am rich I will make it up to you) but I can cover subway rides, buy lunches, and offer some jewelry rewards. I promise not to treat you like a slave.
Hit me up with an email if you're interested! And feel free to pass my info on to anybody who might be keen.

Internet presence

For the NYT Townies column. A harrowing one, this one, as the internet prompts a woman to recall her rape. Not for the faint of heart, but worth a read if you can stomach it. Read it here.
The author wrote to me and said she was proud to have my drawing accompanying her story. Essentially the highlight of my career so far.

Crackup at Radio City

This was a great article - the protagonist was a 24 year old girl, committed to a mental hospital. (there but by the grace of god go I, eh?). Sort of accidentally, sort of on purpose, I made her look a lot like me. A sneaky self-portrait as myself as a mad girl, surrounded by dancing girls. Pretty much sums it up.

Cathedral cradle

Another drawing for the NYT Townies section - the role a Cathedral plays in the life of a family over the years. The article is here.

Hanging her out to dry

I did this drawing for the NYT column 'Townies' last week. It's on the website, and was in the Sunday Review last weekend. It never ceases to be incredibly exciting to have work in print, let alone in print on the scale of the New York Times - I took cheesy photos of myself with the paper but I'll spare you. Probably better suited for my private collection.
You can read the article and see the drawing in situ here.
